What is the mission trip about?
Barré is aimed at working alongside Kontum Missionary and Friendship (KMF) in helping to support the education of ethnic minority children in Vietnam to open up more opportunities for them as well as their families. Most of the families are extremely impoverished and have difficulties making ends meet. They live far up in the highlands of Vietnam where it is difficult to buy food and daily essentials from the nearby towns. Most are uneducated and have lived in the highlands all their life, where they have been overlooked by the government and are too poor to send their children to mainstream Vietnamese schools to receive the most basic of education.
The purpose of this trip is to teach English to ethnic minority teachers there. Rather than offering pure monetary help, we have developed a 10 year programme aimed at first building capacity, laying strong foundations among the locals, and finally, reaching out to the hundreds of impoverished children in the remote villages of Kontum. To provide education to them so that they can help themselves break out of the poverty cycle that they are currently in. We hope to be able to offer educational opportunities for the children, especially in terms of learning and speaking Vietnamese and English. We believe that this will aid them in their bid to enter the public school system and jobs in the future when they graduate and put them at a positive advantage. When we leave the area, we want to be able to leave assured that they are able to build on strong foundations that will last. To ensure this, we have adopted a patient, a sustainable approach to our work.
Volunteers will take part in the daily lessons with the students there. To help to teach the syllabus (will be provided by Barré) and to assist in oral practices with them.
