Heavy rains and storms brought about by tropical storm, Linfa, began on the 6th of October 2020, flooding 6 provinces of central Vietnam. Unable to contain the rising levels of water, hydropower reservoirs opened their flood gates, contributing further to the rising floods. In addition, landslides and rock falls in mountainous areas caused damage to many homes and people.
According to the National Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, the extent of damage caused by 4 successive tropical storms that hit Vietnam from October 6st to October 31st, resulted in 31 deaths, 71 missing persons; 885 damaged houses; 1,400 hectares of rice and 7,800 hectares of crops were flooded and more than 7,000 and 927,000 poultry died or were swept away.
CHARIS pledged SGD 25,000 in response to the appeal made by Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Vietnam, to provide essential supplies and repair works for the affected poor people.
