One of the largest and most vulnerable workforces in India is the seasonal migrant workers, whose figures are estimated to be more than 50 million. They have borne the brunt of the lockdown; many have lost their jobs, but have been prevented from returning to their home villages due to the lockdown.  Instead, they have been kept in camps by the local government with just minimal facilities. Without wages, they have been left struggling to buy basic essentials, much less protective supplies. Many of them fall outside of the public provisioning systems, resulting in food, water, sanitation and healthcare facilities being inaccessible to them. Community awareness on the use of protection and hygiene kits, as well as social distancing, are critical gaps.

Through Caritas India, CHARIS’ initial efforts have been able to help provide food kits, hygiene kits, and awareness generation activities for 3,000 families from vulnerable populations that are either in isolation or taking refuge in camps and other temporary settlements. The efforts also included Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff and volunteers, who have been working tirelessly to save lives by ensuring food security, and supporting essential sanitation & hygiene in order to break the chain in the fight against COVID-19. Much more is needed in India and in the region.

We need your prayers and financial support to ensure the continued aid and assistance to our brothers and sisters in vulnerable communities in areas like Myanmar, Timor Leste, Cambodia, Malawi, in order to provide hygiene kits, protective equipment, sanitation facilities, on top of awareness & education.

Join us, as we support our brothers and sisters in their mission Fortified by Love, and Make Hope Happen.
