Philippines Typhoon Washi

December 2011

Tropical Storm Washi (Local name “Sendeng”) made landfall on Friday evening, 16 Dec 2011 in the eastern province of Agusan del Sur and crossing over northern Mindanao causing severe flash flooding and mudslides across northern Mindanao, particularly in Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental and province Iligan City in Lanao del Norte province.

Situation

Tropical Storm Washi made landfall in northeastern Mindanao on Friday afternoon, 16 Dec 2011 and crossed the mountainous areas of Northern Mindanao on Friday night and Saturday morning. Heavy rains in interior Misamis Oriental and Iligan City in Lanao del Sur province have been the heaviest affected. Flood water has since subsided.

According to latest ground reports from CRS and NASSA, flash floods along the Cagayan de Oro river, with strong currents and water surging as high as 11 feet above their banks, swept away houses and trees completely sending debris downstream. As of 20 Dec 2011, the Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported 998 confirmed deaths with many more missing. The number of dead is overwhelming the local mortuaries. It was reported that 80% of the city is without running water and normal supply may not return for the next 30 days. Cagayan de Oro City has a population of over 600,000 people.
