Thailand Floods

OCTOBER 2011

Heavy rains from tropical storms cause severe floods in Thailand.

Situation

In July 2011, heavy rains from Tropical storm Nock-ten caused flooding in Northern Thailand. Before the floods could subside, additional rains brought by Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae and coupled with the overflowing of water from the dams caused further flooding which spread towards Bangkok.

61 of Thailand’s 77 provinces were inundated, affecting 2.44 million families and displacing over 8 million people. Hundreds have died and many more are still missing.

Rice plantations, farmland, and millions of livestock have been lost. Major industrial estates were also affected by the rising flood water, causing industries to shut down and leaving thousands of workers without jobs.

Some of the foreign companies affected by the flood are Honda Motor Co., Canon Inc., Panasonic Corp., Pioneer Corp., Omron Corp., Nikon and Nidec. The business losses were estimated at US$4 billion.

It is forecasted that the flood situation will prolong until December 2011 before the water subsides and eventually drains into the Gulf of Thailand.

Our Response

CHARIS has been in contact with Caritas Thailand to obtain updates on the flood situation.

CHARIS responded to the needs of the flood victims in Thailand by giving Euro50,000, 10 water filter systems, 2 inflatable boats, 2 outboard motors and 4 life vests to Caritas Thailand in support of their humanitarian relief efforts.

Together with our affiliates namely Loveseeds, ACTS, acts29 and the Catholic Filipino community, CHARIS organized a Holy Mass, consecrated to the well-being and recovery of flood victims in the region, on 8 Nov 2011 at St Alphonsus Church (Novena Church). Msgr Eugene Vaz and Fr Angel Luciano celebrated the Holy Mass. Close to 500 people from all walks of life joined in this prayer. Thereafter, the congregration adjourned to a mini exhibition on Catholic overseas humanitarian work by CHARIS and our affiliates and also viewed samples of the essential supplies which were sent to Caritas Thailand.
