Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae

SEPTEMBER 2011

Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae ploughed through South East Asia in late September 2011 leaving a trail of destruction and causing massive floods.

Situation

Typhoon Nesat was the first to strike with a wind speeds of 105 knots on 27 September 2011. Following the trail of Typhoon Nesat 4 days later was Typhoon Nalgae. It made landfall on 1 October 2011 with winds up to 130 knots. It then went on to strike China’s Hainan Island before arriving in Vietnam, weakening into a tropical storm.

The Philippines

The Philippines suffered a battering by the two typhoons which hit Luzon one after the other.  These two typhoons killed over 100 people and affected some one million families, displacing over 3 million people. Over US$286 million worth of crops, livestock, and fisheries were destroyed. Churches, schools and gymnasiums have been turned into evacuation camps and there are 655 camps established for the internally displaced people (IDPs).

Vietnam

By the time Typhoons Nesat and Nalgae arrived in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam, they had weakened to tropical storms which brought heavy rains causing the Mekong River to swell and overflow. 1,455 dykes were broken through and the surging waters affected 240,000 homes and displaced over 1.1 million people. More than 50 people died in the floods.  Over 34,000 hectares of rice, other crops and aquatic farms have been destroyed.

It has affected over 270,000 families in 113 districts in 17 Provinces. 247 people perished in the floods.
